E - Portfolio of the Intership

   I am Kaveesha Dilsaree Samarawickrama (HS/TE18/0043),  a fourth year undergraduate of University of Kelaniya following the degree of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). This is my internship portfolio which was done for the completion of the course, 'Internship and Writing a Teaching Portfolio'- TESL 42554.  As an ESL practitioner, my perception regarding teaching English is that,  students should be given the chance to learn by themselves while practicing the theoretical knowledge that they learnt in the classroom. So, in this blog a detailed description of my philosophy of teaching, reflective summary and my teacher observation will be explained along with the lessons plans and other testimonials.

‘Teaching’ is different from one teacher to the other. That is because every teacher possesses a philosophy of teaching which is specific for themselves. However, as an ESL practitioner and an undergraduate following the degree of TESL, my philosophy of teaching is based on four components; teaching can be defined as a process in which a teacher should establish a strong teacher – student relationship in the classroom while giving more space to leaners making a learner – centered setting and focusing the practicality of the lesson, and, at the same time, the teacher should keep in mind that every child is unique in some aspects.  Teaching is a kind of an art, and the teacher is the one who crafts it. Significantly, before a person is given the title “teacher”, he/she is a human. So, obviously, his/her emotional background can affect the process of teaching at some point.   When completing my teaching practicum, I could feel myself as a child again.  The experience that I got during this 45 hour as a student teacher was immense because I could gain professional development as an ESL practitioner and I was aware of how to deal with various types of students.  Being an undergraduate at Department of English Language Teaching, I was given all the theoretical knowledge over four years. However, this internship was the place where I could practice all the learnt theories in an authentic educational setting. There is a saying that ‘every journey is not a flower bed’. My internship also was not a linear process. Time to time I had to face challenges. However, I think that admits all the obstacles, I succeeded to upgrade myself as a professional ESL teacher.   Before starting my teaching practicum, I conducted two observations of my teacher – in – charge to have a better understanding bout the learners’ background, and as well as the school. Both the observations were done during the first week of the internship focusing two different groups as mentioned the following. In the morning school I observed the pre – grade students and there were 4 – 5 students (both males and females), and they belonged to the beginner level following the UTEL benchmark 1 and 2. The evening school was somewhat different from morning school as the teacher interacted with the students who belonged to various grades at a single time. Because of that, it was difficult to mentioned an exact number and a level of the students.
